iPhone Duo: Apple's First Foldable, Decoded
iPhone Duo jargon decoded: the crease claim, 2x 'optical-quality' zoom, Touch ID, eSIM-only in India and the ₹2,99,900 price. Who should buy it, and who should wait.

Apple waited years to fold an iPhone, and the brochure for the iPhone Duo reads like it: grade 5 titanium, minimised crease, 2x optical-quality zoom, dual-battery design. It is a 5.4-inch phone that opens into a 7.6-inch mini tablet, and it starts at ₹2,99,900, the highest starting price of any iPhone Apple India has sold. Here’s what each line actually means for you.
The price, first
Apple India’s MRP, October 2026:
- 256GB: ₹2,99,900
- 512GB: ₹3,24,900
- 1TB: ₹3,74,900
- 2TB: ₹4,49,900
That’s ₹1.2 lakh more than an iPhone 18 Pro Max (₹1,79,900) and about the same gap over Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8. It went on sale in India on 23 October, but walking out with one is another matter: pre-orders placed days before launch were already quoting late January 2027 delivery.
Two screens, and what “minimizes crease visibility” means
Folded, you get a 5.4-inch outer screen, about 90% of the 18 Pro’s screen area. Open, it’s a 7.6-inch inner screen with a matte nano-texture finish. Both are 120Hz ProMotion OLEDs that reach 3,000 nits outdoors, so neither is the “lesser” screen in quality.
Read the crease claim carefully. Apple says the display minimises crease visibility. It does not say there’s no crease. Reviewers agree it’s the best-hidden crease on a foldable so far: mostly invisible head-on, visible at an angle or when the screen is off, and you can still feel it with a finger. Durability testers found it deepens over thousands of folds, as it does on other foldables.
The catch reviewers kept hitting is the other screen. At 5.4 inches with the same tall shape as the inner one, the outer screen is cramped for typing, so expect to open the phone for most things.
Grade 5 titanium, and 254 grams
The frame and hinge cover are grade 5 titanium, the same tough alloy Apple used on the iPhone 15 Pro, and the hinge has more than 100 parts. Apple calls the Duo its thinnest iPhone ever when open (5.2 mm). Folded, it’s 11.3 mm thick and weighs 254 g. That’s 53 g more than the Fold8, and you notice it in a shirt pocket.
What the titanium buys you is a proper rating: IP68 against water and dust, to 6 metres for 30 minutes. Samsung’s Fold8 is IP48, which means little real dust protection. For Indian roads and beaches, that’s a genuine point for the Duo.
There’s one development a brochure won’t mention. On 26 October, according to MacRumors, Apple acknowledged an inner-display problem on a small number of units, with cracks appearing along the fold. Owners are being sent to AppleCare for replacements, and Apple hasn’t given a cause yet. If you buy now, buy AppleCare+ with it.
“2x optical-quality zoom”: the camera, decoded
The Duo has two rear cameras, a 48MP main and a 48MP ultra wide. There’s no telephoto lens.
“2x optical-quality” means the phone crops the centre of the 48MP main sensor to get a sharp 12MP picture at 2x. It’s a good trick, and it’s why 2x looks clean, but it isn’t a zoom lens. Go past 2x and you’re in digital zoom, which softens quickly. The iPhone 18 Pro has a real 4x telephoto lens, with a clean 8x crop. If you photograph your kids’ sports day or concerts from row 30, that’s the phone for you.
For selfies there’s a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer screen. The inner screen uses an under-display camera that hides beneath the pixels. It’s fine for video calls (1080p) and not meant for portraits.
Touch ID is back, Face ID isn’t
There’s no Face ID on the Duo. It unlocks with Touch ID in the side button, which works folded or open. It’s quick, but if you’ve used Face ID for years, one reviewer called it the hardest habit to relearn.
eSIM-only: the India-specific catch
This matters more in India than almost anywhere. The Duo has no SIM tray at all. The iPhone 18 Pro sold in India still has one, so the Duo is the exception.
- Jio, Airtel and Vi can all activate an eSIM, and you can keep two numbers active.
- Only Jio and Airtel support quick transfer from your old iPhone. On Vi, you’ll go through the carrier’s own process.
- BSNL isn’t on Apple’s supported list. Check with BSNL before you buy.
- Airtel blocks SMS, including OTPs, for 24 hours after an eSIM conversion. Don’t switch on a day you need a bank OTP.
- Lose the phone, and getting your number back means a store visit with ID.
“Dual battery”: what you actually get
There’s one battery in each half, working as one. Apple quotes up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen and 44 hours on the outer one. Apple doesn’t publish capacity, but teardowns found about 4,883 mAh in total. In reviewers’ tests it lasts a full day of normal use, though it trails the 18 Pro Max on heavy days.
Charging reaches 50% in about 20 minutes with a 60W-capable adapter, and MagSafe goes up to 25W. Neither adapter is in the box.
Apps: the part Apple can’t fix alone
iOS does its share well. Apps reflow as you unfold, two apps can sit side by side, and Apple Pencil (USB-C) support arrived with iOS 27.2 on 26 October, without pressure sensitivity or hover. But at launch, reviewers found many popular apps letterboxed on the big screen, Gmail and Google Maps among them. Netflix and Instagram already fit. This will improve as developers update, but it’s not fixed today.
Honest verdict
The iPhone Duo is the most polished first foldable anyone has made, and still a first version: heavy, expensive, eSIM-only, with no telephoto camera, apps that haven’t caught up, and an open question over cracked screens.
- Buy it if you live in Apple’s world, want the best big-screen-in-your-pocket phone and can absorb ₹3 lakh and some early-adopter risk. Get AppleCare+.
- Wait if you’re curious but not desperate. In a few months the apps will be ready, the crack reports will have an answer, and the January backlog will have cleared.
- Buy something else if you want the best camera (the 18 Pro Max, with Face ID, a telephoto and longer battery, for ₹1.2 lakh less) or the best-value foldable (Galaxy Z Fold8 from ₹1,79,999, or the Fold8 Ultra with a telephoto at ₹1,99,999).
Questions people ask
What is the iPhone Duo's price in India?
Apple India's MRP is ₹2,99,900 for 256GB, ₹3,24,900 for 512GB, ₹3,74,900 for 1TB and ₹4,49,900 for 2TB (October 2026). Bank cashback and trade-ins can bring that down, but stock is tight: pre-orders placed in mid-October were quoting January 2027 delivery.
Does the iPhone Duo have a crease?
Yes, a reduced one. Apple's own wording is that the screen minimises crease visibility, not that it has none. Reviewers found it mostly disappears head-on, shows at an angle or with the screen off, and can be felt with a finger.
Can I use a physical SIM card in the iPhone Duo in India?
No. The Duo is eSIM-only everywhere, India included. Jio, Airtel and Vi can activate an eSIM, but only Jio and Airtel support quick transfer from your old iPhone. BSNL isn't on Apple's list, so check with them before you buy.
Does the iPhone Duo have Face ID?
No. It unlocks with Touch ID built into the side button, which works whether the phone is folded or open. An Apple Watch can also unlock it.
iPhone Duo or Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8?
The Fold8 costs about ₹1.2 lakh less in India (from ₹1,79,999), weighs 201 g to the Duo's 254 g and is thinner. The Duo answers with IP68 dust protection (the Fold8 is rated IP48), Apple Pencil support and iOS. Neither has a telephoto camera; the Fold8 Ultra does, at ₹1,99,999.
