iPhone 18 or 18 Pro? Buy Now or Wait for 2027

Basgo saysPhone dying? Buy now. Phone fine? Wait.

If you waited for September to buy “the new iPhone”, you noticed something odd. Apple launched the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max and the foldable iPhone Duo, and no regular iPhone 18. That’s not a delay. It’s Apple’s new calendar, and it changes when you should buy.

What Apple actually announced, and what it didn’t

Confirmed, and on sale in India:

  • iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, since 18 September (our decode)
  • iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable, since 23 October (our decode)

Not announced: the regular iPhone 18 and the cheaper iPhone 18e. Apple India’s line-up page doesn’t list either.

What the reports say about the iPhone 18

Everything in this section is reported, not confirmed. Apple never comments on unreleased phones.

  • When: the “split launch” was first reported in May 2025. Pros come in autumn, the regular model and the “e” in spring. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman puts the iPhone 18 in the first half of 2027, and MacRumors expects March or April 2027.
  • Screen: 6.3 inches at 120Hz, like the iPhone 17, with a smaller Dynamic Island.
  • Chip: the A20, the non-Pro version of the 18 Pro’s 2nm chip. Analysts disagree on memory, 12GB versus 9GB. That matters because some Apple Intelligence features reportedly need 12GB.
  • Modem: Apple’s own C2, as in the Indian 18 Pro.
  • Cameras: two 48MP rear cameras and a new selfie camera, per leakers. Nothing reported suggests a telephoto, which stays a Pro feature.
  • iPhone 18e: a 6.1-inch 60Hz screen, the A20 and a single rear camera, also in spring.

Today’s iPhone prices in India

Apple India MRP, 27 October 2026, starting storage:

iPhone Starts at Storage
iPhone Duo ₹2,99,900 256GB
iPhone 18 Pro Max ₹1,79,900 256GB
iPhone 18 Pro ₹1,64,900 256GB
iPhone Air ₹1,49,900 256GB
iPhone 17 ₹99,900 256GB
iPhone 16 ₹89,900 128GB
iPhone 17e ₹79,900 256GB

Notice anything? Prices went up in September. The iPhone 17 rose from ₹82,900 to ₹99,900, the iPhone Air from ₹1,19,900 to ₹1,49,900 and the 17e from ₹64,900 to ₹79,900. Reports blame the global memory-chip shortage. Two practical points follow:

  1. Don’t wait for a price drop on current models. It isn’t coming any time soon.
  2. Don’t expect the iPhone 18 to be cheap. The iPhone 17’s ₹99,900 is the floor to plan around. Memory costs could push the 18 higher.

Also note the iPhone 16 now costs more than the newer iPhone 17e, and the 17e has twice the storage. Apple no longer sells the iPhone 17 Pro, though authorised resellers still have some stock.

So: buy now, or wait?

  • Your phone is broken, dying or won’t last the battery out. Buy now. Five months with a failing phone is false economy, and prices aren’t falling. The iPhone 17 at ₹99,900 is the sensible regular iPhone today.
  • You want the best camera. Don’t wait. The base iPhone 18 isn’t expected to get a telephoto or the variable aperture. The iPhone 18 Pro is the camera phone, from ₹1,64,900.
  • Your phone works fine and you want the regular model. Wait for spring. The iPhone 18 should bring the new 2nm chip and Apple’s modem to the regular line, and you’ll see real prices instead of guesses.
  • You want the cheapest new iPhone. The iPhone 17e at ₹79,900 today, or wait for the 18e in spring if your phone can hold on.
  • You were eyeing the iPhone 16. Look at the 17e first. It’s newer, ₹10,000 cheaper and has 256GB.

Honest verdict

The regular iPhone 18 is a spring 2027 phone now, so don’t plan an autumn purchase around it. If you need a phone today, buy today: the iPhone 17 for most people, the 18 Pro for photographers. If your phone is fine, wait until spring and let Apple show the real specs and price first. We’ll decode the iPhone 18’s brochure the week it launches.

Questions people ask

When will the iPhone 18 launch in India?

Apple hasn't announced it. Reliable reports point to spring 2027, most likely March or April, alongside the cheaper iPhone 18e. India usually gets new iPhones on or close to the global sale date.

How much will the iPhone 18 cost in India?

There's no reliable leak yet. The iPhone 17 now sells for ₹99,900 after September's price rise, so it's sensible to expect the iPhone 18 to start around there or higher. Treat any exact figure you see before launch as a guess.

Is the iPhone 17 still worth buying now?

If you need a phone now, yes. At ₹99,900 for 256GB it's Apple's current regular iPhone. If your phone works fine, the iPhone 18 is roughly five months away and expected to bring a faster chip, so waiting costs you little.

Should I buy the iPhone 16 or the iPhone 17e?

After September's price changes, the iPhone 16 costs ₹89,900 for 128GB, while the newer iPhone 17e costs ₹79,900 for 256GB. The 17e is newer, ₹10,000 cheaper and has twice the storage, so compare the two carefully before paying more for the older phone.
