AI Wash, Auto-Dosing, Steam: 2026's Washing Machines, Decoded

Basgo says'AI' means auto mode. Auto-dosing: the real win.

Every washing machine brochure this year leads with the same two letters: AI. Around them sit auto-dosing, steam, Microplastic Care, TurboWash and, new this Diwali, a machine with three drums. Here’s what each feature actually does in an Indian home, and what’s worth paying for.

What’s new this year, and the prices

The launches with published Indian prices:

Machine Type Price
LG AX range (2026) Semi-automatic, 8–12 kg from ₹17,300
LG TX range (2026) Premium top-load, 10–11 kg from ₹32,400
LG AI DD 2.0 top-loaders (Dec 2025) Top-load ₹38,990–₹46,990
LG VX range (2026) Front-load, 12 kg and up from ₹62,900
LG AI DD 2.0 front-loaders (Dec 2025) Front-load ₹69,990–₹1,39,990
Samsung Bespoke AI washer-dryer (2025) Washer-dryer, 12/7 kg from ₹63,990
Haier M3 (Oct 2026) Triple-drum, 12 kg total ₹1,30,000
Elista (Oct 2026) Semi-automatic, 14 kg ₹24,999 MRP

“From” means the cheapest model in a range. Last year’s machines are the bargain: older LG AI DD front-loaders sell well below the new range on Amazon.in.

“AI DD”, “AI Wash”: what the AI really is

DD is the useful part. It stands for direct drive: the motor turns the drum directly instead of through a belt, which means fewer parts to wear and a quieter spin.

The AI part is an automatic mode. LG says its AI DD 2.0 front-loaders detect the weight of the load, the fabric type and how dirty it is, then choose a wash from thousands of possible combinations. Haier’s AI Wash adjusts the cycle to the load. Either way, the machine is picking from preset programmes, not learning your family’s habits. It’s genuinely convenient, especially if nobody at home reads the programme dial, but treat “AI” as “auto mode” and don’t pay much extra for the word.

Auto-dosing: the feature that earns its keep

LG calls it ezDispense, Haier calls it smart dosing. Either way, you fill a tank with liquid detergent and the machine measures out the right amount for each load. LG says a full tank lasts about 30 washes.

Why it matters: most of us overdose. Too much detergent wastes money, leaves residue on clothes and needs extra rinsing. Auto-dosing fixes that without you thinking about it. The catch: it needs liquid detergent. If your home buys powder, it’s useless.

Related: eZ Mix (LG) and Essence Wash (Haier) premix detergent with water before it reaches the clothes, so you get fewer white patches on dark clothes.

Steam, and those 99.9% claims

Steam cycles heat clothes with steam to loosen creases and kill allergens such as dust mites, which helps for bedsheets and allergy-prone families. LG claims its top-loaders remove “up to 99.9%” of allergens. Treat that as a laboratory result under ideal conditions. None of these claims say how they were tested. Steam is a real benefit, but the number is marketing.

“Microplastic Care”

Polyester and other synthetic clothes shed tiny plastic fibres in every wash. LG’s Microplastic Care cycle, which it says cuts microplastic release by up to 60%, is a gentler wash for synthetics so they shed less. It doesn’t filter or capture anything, and LG doesn’t explain the test. It’s nice, but not a reason to buy.

Small features that matter more in India

  • Auto restart after a power cut: the machine resumes where it stopped instead of starting over. On the list of must-haves for most cities.
  • Low-pressure fill: keeps filling when the tap pressure is weak, common in upper floors and during water timings.
  • Hard water wash: a programme for hard or borewell water. It adjusts the wash; assume it doesn’t soften the water.
  • Saree course: a gentle programme for long, delicate fabrics.
  • IPX4 rear panel (on LG’s TX top-loaders): resists splashes from any direction, which suits machines on wet balconies and in bathrooms.
  • TurboWash 360: water jets for a faster full wash. LG quotes 39 minutes on a front-loader.

Triple drums and washer-dryers

Haier’s M3 is the year’s headline oddity: three separate drums, 10 kg, 1 kg and 1 kg, washing three loads at once with separate programmes. It costs ₹1,30,000 and comes with 4 years of comprehensive warranty and 12 on the motor. It’s clever for families who wash babies’ clothes or innerwear separately, but very expensive for most.

Washer-dryers are more practical for India’s monsoon and for flats without a drying space. One spec to read carefully: the drying capacity is roughly half the washing capacity (12 kg wash, 7 kg dry on Samsung’s). A full wash load needs splitting to dry.

Two things the label won’t tell you

  • Stars only compare like with like. BEE tests front-loaders on a 60°C cotton wash and top-loaders on a 30°C one, against different scales. A 5-star top-loader and a 5-star front-loader are not equally efficient. Compare within the type you’ve chosen.
  • GST didn’t change. Washing machines have been at 18% GST since 2018. September 2025’s cut (28% to 18%) was for ACs, TVs and dishwashers. Ignore listings promising a GST-cut price drop on washers.

Honest verdict

Most of 2026’s brochure is auto modes with new names. The features worth paying for are direct drive, auto-dosing (if you use liquid detergent), auto restart after power cuts and a long motor warranty. Steam is nice for allergy-prone homes, while “AI” and “Microplastic Care” are tie-breakers, not reasons to buy. Questions people ask

Does 'AI' in a washing machine actually do anything?

It's an automatic mode. Sensors measure the load (and on some machines estimate fabric type and how dirty it is), then the machine picks from its preset programmes. It's handy, but it doesn't learn your habits, so don't pay a big premium for the word alone.

Is auto-dosing worth it?

Yes, if you use liquid detergent. The machine measures out the right amount from a tank each wash, which stops the overdosing that wastes detergent and leaves residue. LG says a full tank lasts about 30 washes. With powder detergent, it's no use.

Did GST on washing machines change in 2025?

No. Washing machines have been taxed at 18% GST since 2018. The September 2025 cut from 28% to 18% applied to ACs, TVs over 32 inches and dishwashers. Listings claiming washing machines got cheaper from a 28% cut are wrong.

Can I compare the star ratings of front-load and top-load machines?

No. BEE tests front-loaders on a 60°C cotton wash and top-loaders and semi-automatics on a 30°C one, and measures them against different scales. Stars only compare a front-loader with another front-loader, or a top-loader with another top-loader.

What is a triple-drum washing machine?

Haier's M3 (₹1,30,000) has three separate drums of 10 kg, 1 kg and 1 kg that wash different loads at the same time: everyday clothes in the big drum, and, say, a baby's clothes and innerwear in the small ones.
